Music, Listening, and Community as a Practice of Peace
Sing in Peace offers guided singing and listening circles as a shared cultural practice. Through simple melodies, steady rhythm, and collective silence, participants experience calm, presence, and connection beyond language or belief.
Led by Shyam Monk, educator, engineer (IIT), and musician with long-term practice in Indian and intercultural music and meditative traditions. The sessions present music as a repeatable, inclusive format that institutions can safely host and publicly endorse.
No musical experience is required. Participants listen, breathe, and sing together using simple phrases, creating shared attention and group coherence rather than a performance for consumption.

When people sing and breathe together, attention settles and pacing aligns. This creates a shared space where listening becomes easier and participation feels equal and grounded.
What institutions gain
- Supports calm focus and reduces mental overload.
- Creates shared attention across cultures and languages.
- Accessible to all participants, without prior skills.
- Non-sectarian, low-risk, and suitable for public settings.
Research examples
- Group singing aligns breathing and heart rhythm ( Frontiers in Psychology, 2013 ).
- Rhythm supports emotional balance and cooperation ( Ho et al., 2011 ).
- Steady tempo supports nervous-system settling ( Faulkner, 2023 ).
Rhythm as shared guidance
The facilitator holds a steady musical rhythm and melody. Participants follow naturally, aligning breath and attention through simple melodic and rhythmic lines.
- Pulse: a steady tempo the group can follow.
- Harmony: simple chords that give orientation.
- Phrasing: long lines that guide breathing.
